Mk1 Coaches

The Mk1 coach was developed by British Railways in the 1950s as a new standard design to replace pre-war rolling stock inherited from the “Big Four”. Originally used on express services, they were cascaded down to secondary services as newer Mk2 coaches arrived in the late 1960s. The Sprinter revolution of the 1980s rendered the Mk1 largely extinct as loco-hauled trains were replaced by DMUs. However, hundreds of Mk1s survive at preserved railways around the country.

Bachmann have seemingly produced every variant of Mk1 coach ever made. Charlesworth's Mk1s wear Regional Railways livery and are usually coupled up behind the class 37 in matching colours to produce a smart-looking train, as would have been found on the North Wales Coast during the 1990s.
